If you had to say something to someone looking to try CF for the first time, what would it be?
I would say, “I know you make fun of people who are ‘crazy’ CrossFit folks! Say that to my face… Mom!”
Then, I would apologize and say, “Sorry Mom. Can I have some money for the membership? Why don’t you come with me so you can see what you’re paying for?”
Then, she would come and fall for my master plan of getting her in the gym.
How did you get started with CrossFit?
I’m from California, and I started there back in 2009. Started about 8 more times since then and stopped mostly in between. CF Oxygen would be my official start (for reals this time) because I want to get healthier and I’m not as nomadic.
How do you find/make time to get your workouts in?
It’s easy because I can only make the morning classes, so I go to those mostly. Waking up is a struggle so I try to sleep early when I can and sleep in my work out clothes (sorry AM classmates since that’s kind of gross… not that sorry though). Around 0530 hr, I pretty much hate my life but I have faith that my 0700 hr self will feel awesome. My 0540 hrs self usually cries a bit on the toilet, then I drive to class.
What is one fun fact about you that we may not know yet?
I used to be a high school math(s) teacher, but since I moved to Australia, taught myself software engineering. Working out has been important since most of the time I’m sitting around.
In your opinion, what is the biggest benefit of exercising?
After lock down, I was diagnosed with early stages of fatty liver. Since I started working out, the doctor said I’m back to a normal only chubby liver! I have a couple kids so I think about being around to see them grow up. I’m sure exercising is a big part of maximizing the potential for that.
How has being a member at CrossFit Oxygen helped you on your fitness journey?
I love how the work outs aren’t too “bro”-ey, so I feel like the only person I’m competing with is myself. It’s much more motivating to show up. The coaching is great too. I’ve gotten valuable advice on recovery and nutrition. I don’t think I’d have as much progress if I hadn’t learned about things like magnesium (consult your doctor first), and mobility routines.
What is your favourite movement/type of workout?
I like snatch, also Olympic lifting.
What is your least favourite movement/ type of workout?
Wall balls have kicked my ass lately. Also, wall walks. And, the bike. Also, running.
What is your biggest CrossFit accomplishment so far?
Making “Member of the Month!”
What motivates and inspires you?
I generally don’t care about most things, but knowing I can be a good example to my kids gets me out of bed. Seeing improvements here and there also helps since I know I’m getting better with every workout and recovery.
