If you had to say something to someone looking to try CF for the first time, what would it be?
CrossFit can be perceived as being intimidating. It’s not. I remember my first ever class. There were people exactly like me, beginners. You’re never left in the deep end. Workouts are customised for your level of ability. If you’re thinking of starting, do so. You’ll never regret it.
How did you get started with CrossFit?
First discovered CrossFit on ESPN 6 years ago. Love my sports. I was in awe of the athletes. I have a close friend that suggested we try it. I laughed it off. I googled it one night and found a local box. Signed up to a free trial and I’ve never looked back.
How do you find/make time to get your workouts in?
I have 3 kids so time is very limited. The coaches agreed to a 3 day/week membership. I’m a tradie during the day so the afternoon sessions suit me best. Can get home and give a hand with parenting duties. I also have a very accepting partner that lets me escape. I’d love to be full time but I would be signing divorce papers
What is one fun fact about you that we may not know yet?
I’d rather do a 1000 burpees than eat coriander.
In your opinion, what is the biggest benefit of exercising?
I suffer arthritis, so exercising is helping my pain a lot. I’ve got 3 kids to chase after so I want to be mobile and healthy for them.
How has being a member at CrossFit Oxygen helped you on your fitness journey?
I did CF for nearly 2 years 6 years ago. Reached a new level of personal fitness. Unfortunately had to stop, the box I was at closed down and due to financial reasons, new borns and being diagnosed with arthritis, I had to stop. I tried the cheap local gym as a substitute and it was a waste of money. I need someone to tell me what to do. I reached 100kgs, turned 40 and discovered CFOXYGN. In less than a year I’m now 85kgs and easily the strongest and fittest I’ve ever been. So I believe it’s the best form of training!
What is your favourite movement/type of workout?
Weightlifting – Ground to overhead movements and power cleans. And also back squats. Who doesn’t love back squats.
Workout – AMRAPS that involve body weight movements such as push ups, sit ups and air squats.
What is your least favourite movement/ type of workout?
Snatch – Anything that’s required me to squat with weight overhead. My mobility is hopeless. Always had shoulder issues from my work.
Workout – Toes to bar. I suck at the rhythm and the execution.
What is your biggest CrossFit accomplishment so far?
Pull ups. I remember one used to be my max. Now I love them!
Losing the weight and keeping it off.
What motivates and inspires you?
Motivates – The close friend I started with 6 years ago has played a huge part and still does. And it’s the people you meet. The members. People who are exactly like you. Without them it’s a regular gym with no life in my opinion.
Inspires – Definitely the coaches. They are living proof it works and it’s all worth it. And they help you every step of the way.
