Curiosity for something new and exciting prompted me to try Crossfit. I was a track and field enthusiast and competed up to my early 20s. When I left the sport, going to a regular gym didn’t cut it. A friend of mine posted his CF workout on Facebook and I was immediately sold.

Initially I was intimidated walking into the box, hoping I would know what to do and worried I was going to get in people’s way. By the time I joined Oxygyn I knew that CF environments are inclusive and supportive so I was just ready to commit to the program and meet new friends.

My first bright spot was celebrating the fact I completed 5 consecutive training sessions. I remember asking my friend Anny how on earth was she able to train everyday without dying. It seemed impossible. Now 5 sessions a week is what I do without really thinking about it #gainz

I’m currently working on so many things and I’m excited to see small improvements all the time. My main focus at the moment is nutrition and oly lifting. The lifting gets me out of bed in the morning and I’m doing my first weight lifting comp in a few weeks. I’m excited to see what this 39 year old mother of two can do!

Looking back on the year, the learning has been steep. If I could go back to February 2019 I would tell myself that what you do outside the gym (sleeping, resting, refuelling and hydrating) is just as important as the hour of work you do in the gym. I would tell myself to dream big because your body is about to transform into the strongest, resilient and most beautiful version of itself. I would tell myself to trust in the programming and wisdom of the coaches and you will feast on the fruits of your labour. I would tell myself that progress is more complex than merely lifting heavier weights. I would tell myself that I was about to discover the most amazing group of people who will embrace the journey beside me and drive me to work hard everyday.
